At this moment this team has 6 active competitive projects related to the area of behavioral addictions. The main topics are: – Components of psychological vulnerability associated with pathological gambling in young adolescents. – Cognitive-emotional and comorbidity factors associated with the prevention and treatment of gambling disorder. – Sports betting – Platform for real-time detection of players with gambling addiction problems. – Gender and behavioural addictions

INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION

Preferably from the field of psychology. However, in the team there are people from the field of sociology. Also in the field of engineering, through studies with big data and for the design of platforms for detecting problems in real time and communication in the line of advertising and game.
Interdisciplinarity is a fundamental aspect in this line. Addictions are very complex and need to be approached in a complementary way from different perspectives. One of the aspects is from the field of psychology. Also important are the social and contextual factors that affect gambling behaviour through disciplines such as sociology and communication. On the other hand, from the field of engineering and the use of Big data it is possible to know aspects of the user more easily than with other disciplines. Likewise, another important area would be social and educational.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

Society has undergone numerous changes, mainly due to new technologies. The new information and communication technologies have changed the way we live, work, produce, communicate, buy, sell, teach or learn. The whole environment is different. One of these changes has also occurred in the way we play. Gambling is one of the most important economic activities in our society (DGOJ, 2012). Since it was legalized in 1977, numerous forms of gambling and betting have been appearing on the market (for example, gaming machines, bingos, casinos, quinielas or bonolotos). Recently, it has been Internet gambling, both gambling and sports betting, which with their appearance have increased the growth of spending on gambling and the progressive increase in the problems arising from this activity, one of the most noteworthy being pathological gambling (González, 2010). Pathological gambling after the appearance of DSM-V is included in the category of behavioural addictions in the section on addictions (Holden, 2010). At present, many authors consider it to be an addictive disorder (Echeburúa, 2010; Petry, 2006; Potenza, 2006). As can be seen, pathological gambling is described by its clinical criteria, as well as by the aetiology, development, evolution of the disease and forms of treatment, in the same diagnostic category as the rest of drug addictions or alcoholism. This team has the collaboration of professors such as Mark Griffiths and Susana Jimenez-Murcia, international authors of reference in the field, whose participation at the level of ideation and dissemination of results will promote scientific publications of quality and international impact.

INTERSECTORAL COLLABORATION

We work together with the Spanish Federation of Rehabilitated Gamblers and with numerous national and international treatment and research centres. We work in the Responsible Gaming Advisory Board Member in the Spanish Ministry of Finance.

IMPACT

This team collaborates with the Spanish Federation of Rehabilitated Gamblers, present in the different autonomous communities. It prepares clinical guides in collaboration with FEJAR, based on the analysis of data collected in their associations. This entity will promote the transfer to technicians who work directly with the collective, to the people affected, and to society through preventive interventions. Likewise, in this team, its members collaborate as external consultants, for example, for the design of prevention plans in play within the Bilbao City Council and for the development of the Basque Law on Behavioural Addictions in the Basque Country. They have also participated as experts through Appearance in the Congress of Deputies in the Joint Commission for the Study of the Drug Problem in the Congress of Deputies to report on the impact of gambling on young people. – The Spanish Ministry of Finance, through its Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling, published a draft Royal Decree which it introduced a new regulatory framework for the commercial advertising of gambling product. The MAIN explicitly cites work other than the line of research.

INNOVATION

It is a line of work that deals with a subject of great current importance in a long-distance team in the area. It collaborates with different disciplines and some of its projects are innovative. In addition to numerous scientific publications, research has social implications.

INCLUSION

It is a multidisciplinary team, with extensive research and clinical experience in the area, which develops competitive projects with numerous entities and professionals that offer completely integrate the inclusion dimension.
