Young professionals with background in Social Sciences, Law, Economics and Engineering interested in multidisciplinary focus on giving answers to social problems.

This proposal deals with the unexpected challenges and opportunities created by digitalisation in the European labour market. In this framework, the project will focus on the interconnections between digitalisation challenges, employment and socially innovative responses. The final aim of the research is to identify practices and policies that in this intersection are contributing to the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) and the achievement of UN 2030 goals. To contribute to this topic, the thesis will provide:
– a map of digitalisation challenges related to EU labour market where social innovation can make valuable contributions (“map of intersections”)
– an analysis of significant experiences (case studies on organisations responding with socially innovative solutions in this framework)
– an assessment of the potential contributions of the previously defined “map of intersections” to EPSR principles and UN 2030 goals
– a catalogue of proposals for social agents (companies, trade unions, workers,.. aiming to enhance the achievement of EPSR principles and 2030 goals)
– policy recommendations to promote a legal /technological /social ecosystem enhancing these intersections, and contributing to EPSR and UN goals

This proposal is interdisciplinary in both methodological and academic approach; it gathers aspects referred to EU Law, Economic Policy, Social Science and Engineering.
Co-supervision from different disciplines (engineering, economics, law and social science) is foreseen. There is an active research unit, the Core Group on Socio-Digital Innovations within the Social Justice and Inclusion Interdisciplinary Platform working with the European community on Social Innovation. This core group has participated in the FP7 SI-DRIVE project, counts with a solid international and local/regional networking and participates in international events to prepare H2020 proposals.
Interdisciplinary collaboration is, in fact, one of the strengths of the host unit, with members specialised in Economics, Law and Social Science; as a consequence, the projects and academic publications given by the research team count on a combination of these methodologies and perspectives. Synergies of this proposal with projects developed by the research team at this moment (on solidarity, social innovation, minimum income, refuges integration, among others) are expected. INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION
The proposal is fully aligned with the Europe 2020 strategy and the SDGs priorities as it deals with the effective achievement of its goals. At the same time, the topic matches with the H2020 topic: TRANSFORMATIONS 18-20 Technological transformations, skills and globalization – future challenges for shared prosperity
The project aims to get the International Mention with an international 3-months stage at other involved academic or non-academic institution. The Core Group counts with a long-lasting relationship with the European School for Social Innovation (ESSI) as demonstrated by the active participation of the interdisciplinary group in the 5thGlobal Research Conference: Social Innovation and Socio-Digital Transformation Towards a Comprehensive Innovation Policy 28/29th of October 2019. As a result of this collaboration, a paper in press will be published in the 2nd edition of the Atlas on Social Innovation (October 2019). INTERSECTORAL COLLABORATION
Identification of possible relevant external stakeholders to collaborate with in the framework of the proposed topic for PhD *
Is industrial doctorate envisaged? * Yes
The challenge addressed needs the involvement of a broad range of stakeholders (students, employers, policy makers, citizens, practitioners…)
The Core Group is already working with policy makers (European Commission, Basque Government), companies (Urbegi group), networks and social organisations (REAS, Gizatea)
Industrial doctorate is not envisaged since the programme requires the researcher to be hired by the University of Deusto. However, if the participation of an industrial partner is regarded appropriate, it will be involved in the research and training of the PhD student since the beginning. IMPACT
The early engagement of local and international relevant stakeholders (European Institute of Labour Safety, Basque Government,, ESSI… ) will guarantee the co-creation and joint definition of the challenges of socio-digital transformations in the labour market INNOVATION
The most innovative aspect of this hosting offer is the blend of disciplines, actors, and level of analysis in a dynamic and highly internationalised working research unit. At the academic level, three important issues, such as digitalisation, social innovation and employment, offer a unique approach for a multilevel analysis. The main aim is to unveil individual, institutional, regional and systemic responses in a rapid changing labour market. In a context of rapid and constant technology change, that is creating deep impacts in society, social innovations are increasingly playing an important role. INCLUSION
The proposal aims to contribute to a more inclusive European society through increasing knowledge in this area and providing policy recommendations to achieve SDG goals and EPSR principles. Special attention will be paid to vulnerable or at risk of exclusion individuals and groups (single women with children, migrants, etc).
Deusto is committed to social justice and inclusion. It recognises gender equality as a key driver for sustainable development, inclusive growth and academic opportunity for women. Moreover, to seek real inclusion for people with specific support needs, the project will ensure equal rights and opportunities with respect to access to the programme and the acquisition of skills expected to achieve the PhD.
