Dr. Eduardo Carrasco, Senior Researcher at eHealth and Biomedical Applications at Vicomtech (www.vicomtech.org), https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4908-3121
Fundación Centro de Tecnologías de Interacción Visual y Comunicaciones VICOMTECH or VICOM (www.vicomtech.org/en) is an applied research centre for Multimedia, Communication and Visual Computing Technologies located in San Sebastian (Spain). VICOM is a non-profit foundation established in 2001. Vicomtech has a strong record in ICT technology transfer and applied research with companies in different sectors. VICOM’s main research lines lay in the fields of computer vision, computer graphics and interaction. Among its 120 employees, more than 80 are researchers (40 PhD) dedicated to the field of applied research. Due to the direct contact to several industries from different sectors (Engineering, Transport, Medical), the researchers are experts in bringing innovation to the companies with the latest advances in research. At the eHealth and Biomedical Applications Department we closely cooperate with healthcare institutions and industrial partners in the research and development of technologies, prototypes and products for computer-assisted diagnosis, intervention, rehabilitation, independent living support systems, telemedicine and home care and assistive technologies. VICOM has strong expertise in European projects with proven track record in coordinating EU projects, such as DESIREE (H2020-PHC), MIDAS (H2020-PM) …
We are looking for a candidate with strong personal interest in boh computer science and the healthy aging field. The candidate will pursue a PhD at Vicomtech and will collaborate with a team of researchers working in a H2020 project. We are looking for a person interested in science but also in accompilshing applied research, i.e. aiming at developing solutions intended to impact at the society at the short-medium term.
  • Information Sciences and Engineering (ENG)
The candidate will research on several topics that are interlinked together. First, the candidate will research and propose a model to stratify the main characteristic of large populations of elderly people. The model will include elderly people living independently at their homes, but also those elderly people living in other settings such as residential homes for example. Second, an automatic stratification model will be researched and implemented for the automatic profiling of populations of elderly people. The platfom to be developed in the project will provide a wide range of data to be used in the profiling module. Third, methods based on artifical intelligence will be explored for assessing and predicting the subjects with higher risk of suffering social, health or wellbeing decline. Finally, personalized interventions will be proposed for each individual in order to promote healthy and independent living for each elderly person.

* MIDAS (Meaningful Integration of Data Analytics and Services) – H2020 Health Research and Innovation Action aiming to address the needs of policy makers and citizens across Europe by delivering a unified big data platform. This platform will map, acquire, manage, model, process and exploit existing heterogeneous health care data and other governmental data along with external open data to enable the creation of evidence-based actionable information. • CAPTAIN (Coach Assistant via Projected and Tangible Interface) – H2020 Health Research and Innovation Action aiming to create a “transparent” technology designed to turn the home of the older adult into a ubiquitous assistant specifically designed to compensate for their physical and memory impairments during their daily living. It leverages on a few state of the art technologies, such as “projected augmented reality”, real-time 3D sensing technologies, ubiquitous tangible interface or speech analysis. • DESIREE (Decision Support and Information Management System for Breast Cancer) – H2020 Health Research and Innovation Action aiming to provide a webbased software ecosystem for the personalised, collaborative and multidisciplinary management of primary breast cancer by specialised breast units, from diagnosis to therapy and follow-up. Besides being the project coordinator, VICOM is responsible for the development of the decision support system and image processing and breast tissue characterisation.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION

This area requires to integrate knowledge from different areas such as computer science, artificial intelligence, health care, gerontology & psychology.
Yes. Dr. Eduardo Carrasco would be the co-director at Vicomtech for the thesis envisaged.
Vicomtech has been granted with a H2020 project that will last four years. This project is a relevant Innovation Action funded by the European Commission. The research to be conducted will be carried out in this project. This project provides the perfect set-up for the PhD since a wide range of organisations are part of the consortium (36 partners) including relevant universities, health and care organizations, gerontology experts and technology reserch centers. Hence the consortium integrates all the needed interdisciplinarity.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

The proposed topic is fully aligned with H2020 priorities. In fact, the project that has been granted is in the following call: Horizon 2020: Digitising and transforming European industry and services, Topic: DT-TDS-01-2019: Smart and healthy living at home.
No international co-direction is planned so far. But we are open to look for it in the case the candidate is interested in this option.

INTERSECTORAL COLLABORATION

In Gipuzkoa region the Local Goverment is pushing for the development of a network of companies and institutions in the Healthy Aging field. A significant movement in this direction is the creation of Adinberri Foundation in order to foster the growing of this network. In fact, Adinberri is committed to participate in the H2020 project that will set the grounds for the research to be conducted. More info at: https://www.gipuzkoa.eus/es/etorkizunaeraikiz/adinberri
Industrial doctorate is not envisaged at this phase yet. Anyway, at Vicomtech we have a close relation with relevant local industrial players that may be interested in the research project, and the mission of Vicomtech is to promote applied research. Hence, industrial contact will be carried out in order to facilitate the future industrial adoption of the results of the research to be conducted.

IMPACT

There is a significant social awareness on the active and healthy aging issue at this moment in Spain and also in Europe in general. At the same time, there is a high pressure to develop solutions that promote the sustainability of the care that is provided to the elderly people. Hence, the project results will have a high impact on society because it is very much aligned with current social needs.

INNOVATION

A large-scale open platform to facilitate long-term active and healthy aging.

INCLUSION

The proposed topic integrates the inclusion dimension from the very beginning because it aims to provide a service for elderly people in general including those that have dissabilities and are in vulnerable situations.
