Deusto Valores Sociales
We are looking for a candidate with background (MA) in gender and diversity studies, organisation studies, sociology, anthropology, education or a related field; with proven interests in and knowledge of theories on gender inequality and diversity and relevant research experience, including qualitative research. An excellent command of written and spoken English and proficiency in Spanish is needed.
  • Social Sciences and Humanities (SOC)
We invite applications for a doctoral student position at Equality Unit of the University in a research project on organisation and change from a gender perspective, with emphasis on gender equality and diversity work. The applicant will be framed in the GEARING Roles H2020 team, aimed at designing , implementing, and evaluating 6 Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) following the steps described in the GEAR tool (define, plan, act and check) with the firm objective of challenging and transforming gender roles and identities linked to professional careers, and work towards real institutional change. The research proposal is based on the assumtion that structural gender inequality is perpetuated by attitudes, beliefs, and practices that implicitly assign stereotyped roles to men and women in organizations, universities, and society at large. It will delve deep into the sociology and psychology of gender roles to help us explain and challenge gendered career choices, the unequal representation of women and men in scientific careers, and the favoured position of men in leadership and decision-making. Using “life stories” methodology, the research specifically look into men and women’s internalized understanding of gender roles, the social and cultural factors that shape these roles, how they affect their study and work choices, and how these choices relate in turn to the conferred status of scientific careers.

The applicant will be rooted in a vibrant and diverse community, with consortium members and partners from different a) areas of knowledge: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH); committed to working as a solid sustainable consortium where to build mutual learning, real exchanges, and generate tested tools, based on a 4 Is model (Interdisciplinary, Intersectoral, International and Impactful). The proposal will also conduct an appraisal of the differences and similarities between different types of research organisations and disciplines and outline guidelines on factors and indicators in STEM and SSH taking intersectionality into account.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

As Europe designs its future research and innovation strategies in the face of pressing global challenges, Horizon Europe will link closely to the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and Sustainable Development Goals. The United Nations consider “the systematic mainstreaming of a gender perspective in the implementation of the Agenda” (United Nations 2015) to be crucial. Gender equality is an enabler and accelerator for all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The gender-responsive implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development offers an opportunity to achieve not only SDG 5 (gender equality), but to contribute to progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ODS5, Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is also a substantial part of the Basque Country agenda 2030, highlighted in 29, 30, 31 and 32 goals, the Plan for Equality of Men and women (which is under review) will also the contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), in particular Goal 5 (Gender Equality), which aims at achieving women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision making in political, economic and public life
It is envisage the collaboration with Gearing Roles partners to provide the applicant a research stay in one of the beneficiaries.

INTERSECTORAL COLLABORATION

Intersectoral collaboration is based on strong partnerships with local and regional players, such as the Basque Government or the Basque Institute for Women (Emakunde), Networks of schools and teachers, with whom we have already started some negotiations to enrol them in this research.
no

IMPACT

The research developed by the PhD student will focus on gendered career choices, the unequal representation of women and men in scientific careers, and the favoured position of men in leadership and decision-making, sharing and generating knowledge, piloting and testing and improving existing tools and providing new ones and services to generate wide impact in structural change. It will devote special attention on translating project results into a more appropriate language to the broad public, and particularly students and young scholars. Personal stories are readily collected and can provide a vivid window to gender bias within which internalized understanding of gender roles, the social and cultural factors that shape these roles are embedded.

INNOVATION

Our approach to learning prioritizes experiential, practical, reflective, group work over academic approaches. Life stories make up a phenomenological perspective, which visualize human behavior, what people say and do, as the product of definition of his/her world. Life stories offer an interpretive framework through which the sense of human experience is revealed in personal stories so that it gives priority to individual explanations of the actions rather than the methods that filter and sort the answers in predetermined conceptual categories and could be considered as one of the qualitative methodologies that better allow a researcher to investigate how individuals create and reflect the social world around them.

INCLUSION

The adoption of a constructivist gender perspective forces us to incorporate an intersectional perspective that apprehends diversity and plurality in both women and men and how different vectors of inequality interact in the construction of gendered identities of scientists and gendered conceptions of scientific work itself; a perspective that fully grasps sex and gender analysis and includes relevant interconnected dimensions which might be discrimination axes themselves (such as race, class, age, sexual orientation) or other conditions (such as parenting roles, educational and/or professional level, social capital, etc.). Oppressive operations such as racism, ageism, sexism, and homophobia, do not act independently, they are interrelated and continuously shaped by one another
